Late War tournament @ Wargaming Monkeys on saturday 15 november 2014.
Yesterday the neighbouring wargame club, WARGAMING MONKEYS, held their second edition of the BLITZ event. With now beeing a Late War Flames of War tournament for 1500 points and only MECH and TANK lists allowed. Also 3 very nice and tactical scenario's were used. Think of using them for our annual event (Thanks Sven).
So after attending on friday evening a concert @ Amsterdam of Counting Crows it was a short night before departing to "de Kraal" in Herent. Their previous Blitz tournament, an early war one, was also at this location. A very good location for hosting a 25 to 30 player event. Also good on finding closeby parking.
So on arriving at the venue some ussual suspects where already present. Also some clubmembers participated with their FoW army.
So onto the battles.
I used a 6th Armoured Guards Company, lot of churchills in all sizes and shapes with some 25pdr artillery aided by an AOP, M10 17pdr tank hunters and some recce carriers.

So now onto the battles:
First was against Johan from our club which lended some germans from my arsenal. It was the "SEIZE the FLANK" scenario. Playtested it a week before against Henk. So I new a little bit how it goes. Speed up to the objective on the other side. So after deploying my artillery, recce, 1 combat platoon of churchills and HQ. Johan played a Panzerkompanie with Stugs, Panzer4, AA, light panzzrspah platoon, Pak 40, pioneers in halftracks. He also raced his recce to the objective. in the mean time my churchills moved slowly to the objective back-up by the M10's. The crocs with one other platoon of churchills moved forward to his Pak40's on a hill to later come from behind or side of the objective. But after destroying the PaK40's in turn 4 it was to late to get with my slow tanks to the objective, luckely my churchills, recce and M10's where contesting it together with Johan his forces. So a draw and also in killing platoons. TOURNAMENT POINTS 1-1 and 3-3 in VICTORY POINTS. It was a very close and challenging game, what you normally expect when playing a draw. Johan is a very pleasant adversary which I can play from time to time in our club. Thanks Johan for a great battle. Second battle was against Henk. What are the odds to play Henk again after our playtest from last week. Henk is a very strategic and clever player and it's a joy to play him. I have to be at the top of my game to not being hammered like last week. So a rematch it was. And what a rematch. The scenario was DOMINATION. 3 objectives which gave points starting on turn 3 if you contested them alone. So my tactic was get with recce to the woods of 1 objective and stay there and be protected against the uncomming by the M10's. Thanks to the recce move and at the double the objective was controlled on turn 2 but 3 big Panthers were heading to the wood. Luckely the M10's watched over the universal carriers by eliminating 1 Panther and making sure the 2 others stayed away from the objective so this gave mefrom turn 4 on each time objective points. Nice boost. Then on the center I used my crocodiles to contest the objective against his pioneers in the houses so from turn 4 the middle objective gave nobody points but i costed me my crocodile platoon to an infantry attack and my churchill platoon to panther and Pak40 fire. Then on the other side Henk could claim the objective for turn 3 after that it was again contested by my second churchill platoon loosing one tank but remained by the objective. My CC and 2iC helped out the rest by extra smokecover together with the 25pdr's it blocked lot's of Pak and 88'ers fire to my tanks. Otherwise it would be much more bloody for my poor churchills. So a very, very close win on domination points 9 - 7 which gave me a 3 - 0 WIN in TOURNAMENT POINTS but in VICTORY POINTS it was 4 - 3. Again a very close and tactical battle. Thanks Henk. Third against Paulo. It was an adapted Flame of War mission "DUST UP". Played Paulo also on a previous tournament of the Monkeys and very nice player, very relaxed playing against him. I was using my crocs to go to the objective and hopefully be on time before all his tanks arrive to close to me. So when deploying my M10's, 1 churchill platoon, arty and HQ to hold off 2 Panthers, 5 Hetzers, 3 Brumbarr coming on turn 2 it was a big gamble. It were the reserves who won the game. I didn't wast any turns with my crocs going to the objective together with my other churchill platoon and recce but it was to slow and his infantry was retreating so i couldn't go full throttle. On his reserve side the might of tanks and shots proved to much and after 3 turns no allied tank was operational so the objective was for the taking and that was what Paulo did. So a big LOSS 0 - 3 for TOURNAMENT POINTS and no paltoons destroyed from Paulo so left me with a 1 - 6 on VICTORY POINTS. A nice battle and again a pleasant opponent. Only one comment on the scenario adaptation. If all tanks arrive at once it is to heavy. But this scenario will be used also at our CONFLICT event with again a small adaptation. So in the end 1 LOSS, 1 WIN and a DRAW is not bad with the fancy churchill list. Thanks to Sven for organizing a very smoot and nice event. Will definatly come again. Also Geert thanks for making the very tastefull meat stew on beer with bread. And the rest of the monkeys for the organization. Also my opponents for a great day. Until the next WARGAMING MONKEYS. |
Early War tournament, Flames of War @ Maastricht on saturday august 30th 2014
After the very good experience of an early war tourny @ the wargaming monkeys earlier this year I registrered for this one. I first had made a mittlere panzer kompanie list but due too some panzer II tanks late from delivery I switched to plan B a panzerschutzen kompanie.
So after an hour driving and finding some parking space I walked in the vlieg er uit shop. Immediatly saw some familiar faces and started prebattle chit chat.
First battle was against Guy and he played a french mechanised list lots of recce. The mission was encounter. He immidiatly threw all his recce and tanks to me. I had to stay and protect the objective. So after 6 turns fending of all his attacks it was to late to go for the objective so a draw in my favor because I killed 3 platoons of him.
Second battle was agianst Tim with his Finns who won best painted. He had his infantry dug in on the objectives. We played hold the line. It was 4 turns raising the gone to ground with my recce platoon and then fire all MG from the halftracks on the pioneers forming his first line. After a charge these were gone but I got counterattacked by some heavy tanks and when my Panzer IV took care of his light tanks it was too late to save the mission. Lost but just with 3-4 because I destroyed his tanks and pioneers.
Third battle was against Fabian with a motorstrelkovy mechanised kompany. I was defender in counterattack and so half my kompanie was up against 2 big combat platoons, 8 bt7 tanks, 4 t35 and a small plane. Because my Stuka decidedot to show in first turn I was going to have a big problem later on with his heavy T35 tanks and so it proved. I didn't do enough damageon pinning the infantry running towards my objective with only the panzer shutzen platoon sitting on it. Some mortars were pumping in shell on the russian infantry but the komissar dida very good job the whole battle keeping them in the fight. So after an assault in turn 3 I was of the objective. Luckely you can start claim the objective as of turn 6. So still 3 turns to counterattack and that's what I did. My Panzer IV again shot down the complete platoon of light tanks and then got in a gunfight with the T35 but lost it at the end. Some heroic assaults from my chief and a panzer shutzen platoon couldn't prevent the russian wiping everything away from the objective and so in turn 7 a 3-4 loss was the verdict.
3 very nice and exiting battles against 3 sporty and nice opponents. A rematch any time guys.
Came 6 overall on 10.
